The potential for exploiting Scientific and Technical knowledge found in rich-hypermedia content such as blogs, podcasts and videos is not being realized. Web portals designed using digital library and Web 1.0 technologies, tools, and design principles, lack the tools to support content syndication and are incapable of supporting the rich media interactivity and syndication that is needed and currently available in Web 2.0 services. However for the promise of Web 2.0 to be realized, OSTI will need to address a serious challenge in the area of 'information authority', where the concepts of what makes STI 'reliable' and 'authoritative', so fundamental in STI virtual libraries, will need to be provisioned in Web 2.0 frameworks for virtual libraries and collaboration. In this project, we developed and demonstrated a technical framework, based on Web 2.0 and Web Services technologies, that supports OSTI's users as producers, consumers, and aggregators of authoritative STI content. Our approach provides innovations in the following areas: (1) identifying, aggregating and provisioning trusted sources of authoritative multimedia STI content (videos, blogs, podcasts) relevant to the renewable energy domain, (2) developing automated methods and algorithms for ranking content based on authority or trust, (3) developing cross-platform custom widgets for packaging authoritative content for aggregation and distribution, (4) developing services that support multimedia search, and authority ranking and assessment, and (5) developing a prototype for an AJAX-based user interface that extends OSTI’s existing information product Information Bridge. Our design prototype clearly demonstrates how anyone in the S&T R&D community will be able to easily aggregate, consume and syndicate authoritative new media content.
